The intersection of Old Fulton Street and Front Street will henceforth be known as “Patsy & Carol Grimaldi Way.” It’s part of a recent move by the Committee on Parks and Recreation to co-name 103 different streets, thoroughfares and public places across the city.
Patsy and Carol Grimaldi opened their eponymous pizzeria in 1990, converting an old hardware store into a classic coal-fired pizza restaurant. This ushered in a wave of classic coal-fire revivalists including the return of Lombardi’s in 1994, the expansion of John’s and Totonno’s a few years later, and eventual the Neapolitan wave of the 2000s. Patsy and Carol sold Grimaldi’s in 1998, but returned to the neighborhood in 2012 when the current owner of Grimaldi’s relocated to 1 Front Street. Their new pizzeria, Juliana’s, reproduced the same classic coal-fired pizza Patsy became known for. His family history with pizza dates back to his Uncle Pasquale Lancieri, who owned Patsy’s Pizzeria in East Harlem.
A ceremony unveiling the new street sign has been postponed from Saturday, September 26 to Sunday, October 4 at 11am directly across from Juliana’s Pizza, which Grimaldi owned until his death in 2025.
