New Pizza Box Boosts Voter Re-registration

Other pizzerias across the country are invited to join the initiative, with stickers being sent to restaurants nationwide. Here’s the link to get voter registration stickers for your pizza box. Open-source collateral is also available for download at asliceofdemocracy.org (going live Sept. 15) so any pizzeria can turn their packaging into a tool that gets more people to the polls.

Everybody orders pizza immediately after moving into a new home but too many people forget to re-register to vote. That’s the problem at the heart of this new pizza box design, launched by the U.S. Vote Foundation on National Voter Registration Day (September 15). The box design comes from artist Toby Triumph, who was selected by the program’s creators at creative agency Droga 5. It features a QR code that will allow users to scan and quickly check their voter registration. It’s the perfect solution to a serious problem, and it’s on a pizza box!

The new box is available from three incredible pizzerias: F&F Pizzeria in Brooklyn, NY (a frequent stop on our NYC pizza tours); Pizzeria Bianco in Phoenix, AZ; and Tribute Pizza in San Diego, CA. Participation grew through the close-knit connections within the pizza community, with one shop vouching for the next. F&F brought in Bianco, Bianco brought in Tribute, with the goal for even more to participate. All are independent, family-run businesses that treat their pizzerias as a gathering place first.

The U.S. Vote Foundation, a non-partisan non-profit that has helped to provide best-in-class voter services to American voters for more than 20 years, and F&F Pizzeria are working with creative agencies Droga5 and Accenture Song on the campaign.

With the midterms on the horizon, the campaign aims to help tackle an overlooked problem in American democracy—lost votes due to an address change.

When people move, they need to re-register to vote at their new address prior to the election. But with so much to manage during a move, voter registration can be the last thing on anyone’s mind. At the same time, there is one thing Americans consistently prioritize on moving day: pizza. Research shows that more than 80% of Americans have ordered pies when they move, making a pizza box one of the first things to arrive at their new address—and the perfect vehicle for a re-registration reminder.

Surprisingly 10% of voters are not registered at their current address and the majority of those people moved within the past year, according to research from the Bipartisan Policy Center.

“Our mission is to enable every citizen to easily engage in their democracy,” said U.S. Vote Foundation Founder & CEO, Susan Dzieduszycka-Suinat. “What better way to do that than through pizza? It’s inherently democratic. It’s one of those rare things everyone can get behind.”
