Every year we work with a different designer to create a holiday card we send to pizzerias, private tour clients, and various pizza buddies. To design this year’s card, we tapped none other than the great Joe Lacek. His name might be missing from art history books, but it’s our mission to change that. Back in the days when pizza boxes were printed with just one or two colors, Joe and his colleagues at Smurfit-Stone Containers (a huge supplier of pizza boxes) were working on the first 4-color designs. This was an important step in the history of pizza box art!
I featured Joe and some of his most thrilling designs in my book Viva La Pizza: The Art of the Pizza Box, which came out over 10 years ago. Joe has since become a collaborator and friend. He even showed up on a tour one day with a custom printed box for me!
