Women in Pizza: Rose and Susan from John’s Pizzeria in Queens

**In celebration of Women’s History Month, I’ll be posting about women in the pizza community every few days this month. The pizza biz is pretty male-dominated, so let’s take this opportunity to throw the spotlight onto some of the women who are doing amazing work in the pizza world. Today’s post is none other than the dynamic duo of Rose and Susan Bagali, the mother-daughter team behind John’s Pizzeria in Elmhurst, Queens.

Rose Bagali opened John’s Pizzeria with her husband (guess what his name is) back in 1965 on Grand Ave in the Elmhurst neighborhood of Queens, NY. When John retired, Rose took the helm with the aid of her daughter Susan. The duo make great New York style pizza in a true neighborhood slice shop. From the moment you walk in, there’s an incredible warmth from the twosome that makes you believe they exist only in that space.

Not only are Rose and Susan incredibly special people, they also make killer pizza. You have to try the Sicilian, but let them know a couple days in advance if you plan on ordering an entire pie so they can make the right amount of dough. I’ve been burned by this too many times, but it’s totally my fault. Rose and Susan can do no wrong.
