Women in Pizza: Audrey Sherman

**In celebration of Women’s History Month, I’ll be posting about women in the pizza community every few days this month. The pizza biz is pretty male-dominated, so let’s take this opportunity to throw the spotlight onto some of the women who are doing amazing work in the pizza world.

Sometimes people just have a calling. It’s a mysterious drive to accomplish something you might not have normally pursued. Audrey Sherman answered pizza’s call after studying journalism in Italy, When she moved back to her then-home of San Francisco, Audrey began her studies with Tony Gemignani, one of the world’s leading pizza makers and instructors. She worked with Tony for years before heading to New York City with him to help him open a pizzeria called 900 Degrees. Her time in NYC gave Sherman an entirely new experience in pizza, one that she would later bring back to her native Boulder, CO.

I remember bringing tours to 900 Degrees when Audrey was in NYC and it was always interesting to hear her perspective. This place had two different ovens to accommodate a few different pizza styles, so it was always fun to do comparative experiments baking the same pizza in both ovens. We learned a ton on those tours and Audrey made it possible. After a few months, 900 Degrees closed and she went back to Colorado to work on opening her own pizzeria.

Audrey Jane’s Pizza Garage opened in 2015 with the goal of bringing authentic New York style pizza to Colorado. Judging by the photos I see on her Instagram, the crew at Pizza Garage is doing a killer job. It’s absolutely on my list of pizzeria to hit and I vow to make it there some day. In the meantime, I’m sure Audrey will be making some seriously awesome pizza for the people of Boulder.
