Just look at this pizza. I know it’s not the standard fare, but that exactly why it’s important. NYC is often thought of as a pizza purist’s stronghold but that doesn’t mean there aren’t outliers making some truly innovative treasures. It should be no surprise that one excellent example is located in the back of a bodega in Jackson Heights, Queens. You read that right.
Here we go, into a corner store that’s surprisingly large for a NYC bodega (it’s two storefronts wide!) in search of Los Amigos. This all happened a few months ago, so I forget the details I tried so hard to remember that fateful night. I seem to remember the proprietor having worked at one of the fancy pizzerias in town, honing his skills in thin crust. The pizza’s structure reminded me of the Vezzo, Spunto, Tappo, Gruppo, Brado family but the toppings were beyond.
We saw a pizza on the menu with avocado and pepperoni so of course we had to have that one. Actually, I think we got two!
Places like this are so special because they play with the format of pizza. There are no rules at Los Amigos. You can put pepperoni and avocado together. WHO CARES?!?!?!?!
